We will begin with basic torch safety, and the very basics of laying on your “footprint” for a basic bead (and your “marker” bead.)Pulling stringer from the Bullseye Rods in order to embellish your beads with dots and stripes; making twisties and using reactive colours for the “wave”, will all be demonstrated and practiced. The experience of working with molten glass and the Minor Burner, will give you an idea of the basic principles of the Hot Shop: you must always keep your bead mandrels turning and horizontal; you must constantly be aware of the core temperature of your beads as you add surface embellishments, and you must remember that all equipment and tools are HOT! You will be instructed on safe handling and briefed on the procedure. The gaffer will “gather” molten glass from the furnace, and bring the punty to you at the marver. You will then roll the “gather” in the coloured frits selected. The gaffer will “reheat” at the glory hole. You will manipulate the hot glass into your chosen design, and the gaffer will make the final “gather” and shape it. Your paperweight may be picked up the following day. The 6mm prefired blank will be fired Over your cut designs, and you will be using the concept of negative space to create an intricate design. Your designs can be totally organic and free form, or you can portray a realistic image. We will have examples of both, and a good assortment of pre-fused 6 mm “blanks” for you to choose from, for your design. Certain blanks will be “preferred” for specific outcomes, and this will all make sense when you see the examples! We will have a number of designs for you to use, or you are welcome to draw, or bring your own. (ours are from adult colouring books, which have some great options!)
